Down the end of our road, about eight or nine minutes away, there is a rather gorgeous lake. Last time we went there, Boris attracted attention by catching fifteen (15!) small bass. These are one of the local fish varieties. There are also bream, catfish, trout, crappies (!) and a range of other species, most of which are apparently good eating. We'd been in a Walmart looking at fishing gear, and Boris 'stole' some trace by biting it off a reel with his teeth. He bought a few hooks and then at home constructed himself a makeshift fishing line using a key ring as a sinker and part of a car aerial as the stick on which to wind the line. He found worms in the leaf litter under trees in the forest to use as bait. Well, the lake yielded its young, and Boris unwittingly became the centre of attraction amongst the families picnicking there as he reeled 'em in. He had to give each small boy a turn at throwing the fish back (see photos).
Today we went to another lake up country where there are cabins to rent. We were just doing a reconnaissance trip, and found once again that there are great places to visit which are literally a short drive away. Deer, snakes, scorpions, racoons and woodpeckers ... the good, the bad and the ugly.
If there is actually anyone out there it would be good to get a posting, as right now I'm not sure if the blog is working. Once again - let me know ...
Go Boris!! How to impress the locals!
ReplyDeleteThis is just to say keep blogging! I'm sorry I've not responded sooner - no email access really since I've been in Europe - but this is a great idea and I will be following avidly...
And might post a post of my own very soon...

Hi
ReplyDeleteDad your Pleasure garden images are on their way.. sorry took a couple of days because unitec wouldn't post them for me! Lots of people at work have been asking how you guys are going and what it's like there and whether you have a house yet and if there are any pics? Once I told them you have a blog everyone wanted the address! but wasn't sure whether to give it out.. so I didn't...
Imy and Barry and I need some advice on where's the best places to go in Greece on a time and money budget? Like are the Greek Islands a must-do? I know it's early days yet but we have started planning the itinerary so we (mainly me!) know how much saving to do! And Barry's the worst he already has a shopping list for stuff to get in the States!
Love to you all and yes it's time for another update!

Just another quick hello while i have access to the internet... Hope you all dig this deep into the blog to find my comment!
ReplyDeleteI am in the pyrenees-atlantique (south-western france), in a small village called Salies de Bearn, where my friends john and derek have built a lovely home in the maison de maitre style, according to the village regulations, complete with shutters... Been eating unbelievably delicious garden-grown tomatoes, unpasteurised cheese, etc., etc. And it is hot!! 32 degrees and very humid. tomorrow I go by train to nice, spend the weekend there, then another 10hrs by train to venice.
Had a ball in Koln/Cologne, which has the most breathtaking cathedral in the centre of town - and yes I climbed the 509 steps to the top of the spire. Fried my brain on Deleuze and met many interesting people, a few of whom I'll definitely be nurturing friendships with. Also visited the fantastic Max Ernst museum - and apparently Nice has museums devoted to Matisse and Chagall - it's quite great getting the life story along with the work, I'm all for the hagiographic single artist gallery! It's lovely to be in Europe again, and right now of course I'm vowing to (somehow or other) do this much more often.
Looking forward to more news from 'Bama and more photos, it really is great to be able to see your american life unfolding in multi-media. Hoping J and B have by now fully recovered from their travel malaises and are working in earnest on their southern twang.
Oh and guess what - i've been told about a fantastic yearly interdisciplinary cult studs/critical theory type conference in Atlanta, towards the end of each year... Something to aim for?
Lots of love to everyone (great to follow your news too Imy and Sylv!),
